In the theatre, “The Half” begins 30 minutes prior to the start of the show. During this time, the actors mentally prepare themselves for the task ahead by “getting into character”. Football teams often have that crucial team talk during the 30 minutes before the big game kicks off.

So what do I do during the 30 minutes before a course starts?

In an ideal world, I’d be relaxing with a cup of tea or a glass of water, knowing for the next few hours I’ll be on my feet (or in the case of a virtual course, talking non-stop).

In reality I’m frantically trying to get that last PC to boot up, I’m answering emails, I’m taking phone calls and I’m engaging in small talk with delegates who arrive early.
