People attend training courses for a number of reasons. Sometimes it’s goal driven, an objective in an appraisal, for example. Sometimes it’s a forced requirement, where access to a system or specialist equipment is only given once appropriate training has been undertaken and sometimes it’s because the opportunity is there and the training is free or being paid for by the employer.
Where I work we charge a fee for no shows and late cancellations (we can waive it, it’s to discourage no shows) and quite often the delegate, when told of the cancellation fee says “I’ll send someone else in my place”.
I often wonder how much benefit the “substitute” gets from the training. I wonder if that person is truly interested in being trained. If that person had a training requirement would they not have sought training themselves anyway.
How do you deal with those delegates who don’t really have an objective for attending your training courses?
